Graduate Certificates allow you to earn specialized credentials for specific types of service en route to your M.Div.

Students pursuing a M.Div. may seek multiple certificates. Each Graduate Certificate is 9 hours unless otherwise stated. Students who already hold a Master of Divinity may earn additional certificates.

Graduate Certificates allow students to pursue theological training unique to their ministry context and career goals.

Upon graduation, students who have earned Graduate Certificates will have them officially recorded on their transcript.

Simultaneously earn a M.Div. + Graduate Certificate

Utilizing elective hours within the M.Div., students may pursue one or multiple Graduate Certificates en route to their degree.

Male student graduates

Graduate Certificates allow you to pursue specialized ministry training en route to your M.Div.*

Standard Graduate Certificates are 9 credit hours. Advanced Graduate Certificates are 18 credit hours.

Earned Graduate Certificates will appear on a student’s transcript upon graduation.

*Students who already hold a M.Div. may pursue stand-alone Graduate Certificates.

The Southern M.Div. allows students 21 hours of unrestricted electives.

Students who pursue one Graduate Certificate will utilize 9 of these 21 elective hours. Students who pursue 2 Graduate Certificates will utilize 18 of 21 elective hours.

Note that an Advanced Graduate Certificate will utilize 18 of 21 elective hours.

With the exception of Biblical Counseling, students may choose any combination of a wide array of electives within the discipline of their desired Graduate Certificate(s).

Only students enrolled in the M.Div. at Southern Seminary, or students who already hold an accredited* M.Div. may pursue a Graduate Certificate.

*Only those who already hold a Master of Divinity degree accredited by the Association of Theological Schools.

Students who desire extensive study in one discipline may pursue an 18 hour Advanced Graduate Certificate.

The following students are eligible to apply for and pursue stand-alone Graduate Certificates:

  • M.Div. alumni of Southern Seminary
  • M.Div. alumni of other ATS-accredited seminaries.

The application for Graduate Certificates comprises of:

  • The full, online application
  • Official transcripts of your M.Div.
  • Pastoral recommendation from your current church (provided in the application).
